Nicola Cornick’s latest historical fiction novel, Unmasked, is available as an “enriched edition” e-book at eharlequin.com.
Harlequin promo:
Have you ever read something in a novel and wished you could see a picture, find a definition, or learn more about it without having to look it up? Now you can! This special electronic book is enhanced with web links to information about Regency history, terms, and customs that will bring the world of Unmasked to life, all without leaving your screen.
This is the publisher’s first try at such enrichment, and it’s a good choice. Though I’m already getting the print version, I’m tempted to buy the e-edition just to get the good links to use as reference for my own Regency stories. Also, it’s a chance to get in that cool historical background we have to leave out more and more as word-counts drop for series romances. If this format is popular, will our word-counts go down even more?
I’m not a fan of long-form reading on the screen yet, but I love our print copy of RL Stevenson’s Treasure Island, called “The Whole Story” edition. It is wide format, shiny pages, big type on a 4-col grid. Three columns are big text, with the outside column pull-outs, quotes, history and definitions of words in the text. And loads of period illustrations, from a parade of types of sailors to what snuffboxes and pipes looked like. Having these “enhancements” helped me understand the text and the times and more-deeply enjoy the adventure. Good job, Viking/Penguin Books and Editions Gallimard on this edition.
