The horse you came in on

What does it mean when your characters change name in mid-draft and you don’t even notice? Maybe not as fleshed-out as we thought. At least their actions aren’t interchangeable.

In today’s writing, we went a step further–a character didn’t even show up for a scene. I’d remembered the outline wrong and used a different character altogether to start the conflict. Hmmm. Might be a case of Secondary Character Stealing The Show. He does have the best hair.

It feels so good just to “vomit words onto the page,” as one best-selling novelist puts it. I have the sense of getting a lot accomplished. And it’s true that it’s easier to edit a crappy page than an empty page. If only I could make a living vomiting stories onto pages and having someone else clean them up.

But I like the editing, too. I do.

Right.
