One of my historicals, “Musical Ties,” has made the final cut in the Washington Romance Writers annual writing contest (based on the first 3 chapters and synopsis). It’s the story of a high-born lady musician who lies to get her compositions published by a “truth-or-nothing” publisher at the end of the Napoleonic wars.
WRW is my “home” group, so this is way cool (plus my name gets to be pink in the listing, plus I posted it myself as the volunteer Webtamer). Winners will be announced during our annual retreat in late April. Then I’ll get the contest critiques, which are usually detailed and often spot-on. Then I’ll post the first scene here.
I scored back-to-back finals in 2006, with the first manuscript I ever “finished,” and thought I was steps away from a major book deal. Then, nothing. And more nothing. Three whole MSes later (and a few partials), I now see how far I have yet to go. But I keep plugging on. I like to say I’m on a 10-year plan with the romance writing. Or, on the very-busy-at-work days, the 10+10-year plan. Life is long; I’ll get there eventually.
